It’s weird the things you see here…
I wandered into Olhao yesterday. I’d picked up a fridge/freezer from Tavira, and had to drop it off at my house on Rua da Cerca.
I thought this would be a good opportunity to catch up with Lucas, the Brazilian guy helping me with some work on my roof (he’s got a great work ethic if you’re looking for someone to help you out!).
Anyway, I simply wanted to see how he was doing and maybe have a beer…
So there we were, sitting having a quiet drink at P&A on the front, talking about the house (and other general bollocks!) when we hear a rumbling sound.
We look at each other.
The rumbling gets louder, and we see flashing blue lights in the distance.
Other customers in the bar are now sitting up
The people walking on the pavements stop and stare.
Everyone seems to be pulling out their mobile phones for some reason.
What on earth’s going on?
The rumbling gets louder still, and then we see that there’s a police car coming along the strip towards us – slowly.
And behind it?
Behind it there are hordes of motorbikes, revving their engines, the riders and their pillions shouting and hollering!
Everyone on the street is taking photos and videos on their phones – why? Who knows!
The noise is tremendous! Noise and exhaust fumes fill the air. It goes on for several minutes. Bike after bike goes past, some with passengers, some without – and then we see the last bike. The rider holds his clutch and guns the engine – a particularly throaty sound – as if to say ‘Cheerio’, and then they are gone, followed by a couple of ambulances (I’m not sure why the ambulances, the bikes were only going a couple of miles an hour…)
The rumble slowly disappears up the strip and everyone gets back to chatting over beers and wine.
What was all that about?
I have no idea… just another day in Olhao…
